Default dimensions

Funnel now has three default dimensions that group the data according to preset rules. These dimensions are:

  • Traffic source
  • Paid/Organic
  • Campaign

A default dimension has a simplified edit mode but you have the option to create rules to override the Funnel presets:

Google Analytics Upload: "Upload now"

There is now an option to have Funnel run the Google Analytics upload immediately. If you don’t want to wait until the next scheduled upload or have made some changes to the export rules you can now have Funnel run the upload at the click of a button.

You can now combine two dimensions in the same dashboard table. An example of this could be tracking the performance of advertising tactics broken down by market:

Better in-app help

Funnel is now a lot better at providing you with info as to why some pages can not be displayed and what you need to do to fix the problem. This is one step in our current process of making the whole Funnel platform easier to use.

Currency conversion is now fully automatic

Funnel now automatically converts currencies for you by default, so you no longer need to worry about which currencies your connections have. You only have to go to Currencies if you want to add additional currencies to display monetary values in or to explicitly set the exchange rates used. As before, rates are fetched from Open Exchange Rates on a monthly basis.

If you have previously enabled automatic rates or set ones specific to your account this will continue working as before. The Currencies page works a bit differently now, however - from now on you choose ‘manage manually’ if you wish to do so, otherwise Funnel will automatically convert between the currencies as needed.

"Week to date" and "Previous week" date options

This update adds the date range option "Week to date" to dashboards, which let’s you view your data for the current week up to the present day, analogous to the "Month to date" option. Similarly there is now also a "Previous week" comparison option, which is useful for displaying the current week’s performance compared to the same period the preceding week.

Exclude dimension values from dashboard widgets

You can now explicitly exclude certain dimension values from widgets in dashboards. This is especially useful when creating table widgets and you don’t want a row for data without a value for the dimension you’re creating the table for:

Filter entire dashboard on Dimension values

This update lets you add a filter to a dashboard that affects the whole dashboard. The filter itself works just like filters for widgets but with the difference that it applies to all widgets on the dashboard for which it is set.

One of the most common use cases for this is filtering the dashboard per market, like in the example below. However, you can of course set the dashboard filter on any dimension you see fit.

Transform connection values

This feature is very much related to our previous product update: Use connection data as dimension values.

When using values from your connections’ native dimensions for assigning Funnel Dimension values, there can sometimes be useful to transform these slightly.

Say you’re creating the Campaign dimension used as an example in the previous product update, and that you have all your Google Analytics data in lower case. Let’s also assume that your ad account data comes in mixed case.

Taking the values for Ad campaign name and GA campaign and assigning these as values for your new Campaign dimension in Funnel will unfortunately not work very well. This since you’ll have no dimension values with data from both your ad accounts and Google Analytics, due to the Ad campaign name not matching the GA campaign as they are in different cases.

This can now be solved, since Funnel lets you transform the values. You can, for instance, choose the option "Capitalize first", which takes the value from the connection and sets the first character to upper case and all following characters to lower case.

Applying this setting will make sure the Ad campaign name value and the GA campaign value are equal, as they now not only share the same text but also have the same case.

Use connection data as Dimension values

This one is a bit tricky to explain, but it is extremely useful. Funnel now lets you use the native values from your connection’s data as Dimension values.

What does that mean? The most obvious use case is to create a Dimension called "Campaign" that groups data from all ad accounts with data from all Google Analytics Views based on the ad account name and the GA campaign value, respectively.

To do this, pick out the campaign name value from the advertising platform and assign it as dimension value, and pick out the GA Campaign value and assign that as dimension value.

This is handy since Funnel will now create a dimension value for each Ad campaign name value and each GA campaign value, respectively. When the Ad campaign name is equal to the GA campaign, the dimension value for the "Campaign" dimension will get data both from the ad account and from Google Analytics.

Filter columns in Data Explorer

Exploring your data can reveal a lot of insights, but it often becomes overwhelming without the ability to get rid of the stuff that’s not relevant to your analysis. Funnel’s Data Explorer now has the ability to filter on any column which lets you show only the data that matches your criteria.

Say, for instance, that you want to understand what traffic sources with a monthly revenue generation over 3,000 has the lowest cost per transaction. As long as you’ve taught Funnel the right Dimensions this is not a problem:

Dashboard widgets can now use your dimensions values as filters. This opens up a lot of possibilities to create widgets that show just the data you’re interested in tracking on a regular basis.

For instance, you might be interested in tracking the performance of your various paid search tactics. As long as you have Dimensions in place to segment your data this way setting it up is easy.

Split widget data on any Dimension

It is now possible to create dashboard widgets and have the data split along any of your Dimensions. This means you can create line charts with one line per dimension value as well as bar charts and tables with rows as dimension values.

Introducing Dimensions

Big news today! If you’ve been paying close attention to these updates you’ve probably noticed that the update frequency has been somewhat low of late.

The reason behind this is that we’ve been focusing on delivering the next big step for the Funnel platform: Dimensions.

What’s new?

Funnel has up until now conceptually had 4 distinct hierarchical levels:

Account > Website > Channel > Campaign

This is no more.

Out of these 4, the only surviving concept with the introduction of Dimensions is the Account. Below Account you’ll be able to create any Dimension you need, and they have no inherent hierarchy.

You might, for instance, want to segment your data by Market, Traffic source, Campaign and Media type. That’s no longer a problem as each of these could be its own Dimension in Funnel.

How do I get started?

We’ll be rolling out Dimensions to all customers gradually. If you haven’t gotten access yet and would like to get it just let us know and we’ll help you get set up.

"This week" and "Last week" as date ranges

Dashboard widgets can now show data for only the current week, or the one just passed. If you aggregate your KPIs by week you can thus use this setting to isolate the most relevant data in your dashboard widgets.

You can now decide what day of the week to have as the first day. This affects line charts when showing the values per week, as well as any dashboard widget when choosing a date range that’s based on weeks.

New navigation

Navigation in Funnel just got easier. We’ve introduced a new top navigation for things concerning the Funnel account. Unlike its predecessor this navigation is always there, regardless of whether you’re viewing a Website dashboard, inviting new users or working in some other view within your Funnel account.

We’ve made this change to make it easier to find your way around Funnel and also to make a more clear distinction between the concepts of Account and Website.

Funnel can now compare any two date ranges you select in the Analysis views. This includes the ability to compare two periods with differing length, which is handy if you need to compare two marketing initiatives spanning over two distinct time periods.

Automatic currency conversion

Funnel can now update your currency conversion rates automatically. When enabled, rates will be automatically set on a monthly basis and will keep updating without you having to do anything about it.

If you have some currency conversions where you need complete control over the rates you can still handle these manually, and let Funnel convert all other currencies. Rates are fetched from Open Exchange Rates on a monthly basis.

The adding of new metrics continues. We just added a few new metrics from Kelkoo aimed at tracking conversions as measured by Kelkoo.

We’re happy to announce automatic uploading of cost, impression and click data to Google Analytics. This new feature lets you have your advertising data up to date in Google Analytics without you having to do anything but set it up.

Global currency exchange rates

Currency exchange rates have moved. They used to be managed individually for each Website, but are now handled for all Websites within an Account in one place. This should save a lot of time if you have a few Websites where you update the exchange rates frequently, and also minimize the risk for errors as exchange rates will now be the same for all Websites within an Account in Funnel.

The turn has come to AdWords to get its own set of native metrics in Funnel, just like Facebook and Bing got over the past weeks.

Funnel just got a bunch of new metrics native to Bing. If you’re a heavy Bing advertiser this means that you can now use Funnel to learn more about how your Bing advertising is performing.

All metrics native to a platform now comes with the platform’s icon in the Analysis view table. This in order to make it easier to understand what metrics you’re actually looking at. Metrics from different ad platforms sometimes have identical names, which easily leads to confusion when viewing the data.

Metrics that are common between ad platforms (e.g., Cost) still comes with the "i" symbol.

With the introduction of lots of new metrics to Funnel the custom metric editor needed a redesign. Besides better handling the large amount of metrics, the new custom metric editor also provides more assistance when you’re creating a new custom metric.

When a line chart has multiple series the legend tends to get crowded. To better handle this we’ve introduced the option to have the legend to the right of the chart area, as well as the option to not show it at all.

You’ll find legend settings below the series selector while editing the widget.

All monetary metric values in Euro, Dollar and Pound now come with a currency symbol. This applies to all views in Funnel, including dashboards, the Analysis views and the Report Center.

New style for number widgets

Number widgets in dashboards has gotten a facelift:

A couple of weeks ago we started introducing metrics native to Facebook in Funnel, and we’ve now added Facebook pixel conversions to that list.

You’ll find both the standard Facebook conversions, as well as your own custom pixels and events, along with derived metrics from these (e.g., cost per pixel conversion).

The bar chart widget in dashboards is updated with the option to show the values as percentages. This lets you get a better idea of how big a given Channel’s contribution is compared to the total for the selection.

To show percentages in a bar chart, use the "Show percentage of whole" toggle while editing the widget.

It is now possible to format the body text in a Funnel report. Use markdown to get the style you want:

Improved Analysis tables

The tables in Analysis (the Channels & Campaigns views) just got the same update as dashboard tables got a few days ago.

That is, the first column stays put while you scroll horizontally and its style has been updated to better highlight the dimension column from the metric columns.

Funnel just got a new way of selecting what metrics to show. This applies both to dashboard widgets and to the Analysis views.

Metric categories have been updated in order to make it easier to find the ones you’re looking for, and so has the search. You can still order your selected metrics by dragging and dropping them into position, which is done on the right hand side of the metric selector.

Improved dashboard tables

Tables in dashboards now display a lot better when wide, as the first column stays fixed while you scroll horizontally. This should be useful since tables tend to get quite many columns as there are often numerous metrics that are tracked.

In the case of creating a Metric / Month or Channel / Month table, it can be useful to have the table show 12 months - which also requires quite a wide table.

One of the most common workarounds we’ve seen in Funnel is to use Custom metrics just to change the name of Funnel’s default metrics.

With this release that’s no longer necessary as you can now change the name of any metric in Funnel. A few examples of changes we’ve seen:

  • Make the Goal names prettier
  • Have metrics in your own language
  • Let Spend be called Cost

More Facebook metrics

We are working to bring you more metrics. The first step is now available with numerous new Facebook metrics. To handle these new metrics we are also improving the grouping and search-ability in the metric selector in order to make it easier to work with. Derivatives (e.g., Cost per…) are coming soon followed by Facebook pixel conversions.

A feature request we’ve heard numerous times is the ability to easily see the totals for a filtered set of campaigns. This is now possible with the redesigned filter in the Campaigns view:

More time ranges for dashboard widgets

Funnel’s dashboard widgets now have a set of new time ranges to choose from. Together with the "time machine" this should be a useful update if you’re creating reports for other stakeholders and need specific time ranges for which you want to share data.

The third dashboard table type is here. It shows metrics as rows and months as columns. It can include data from one Channel only or for a selection of Channels.

We’ve also redesigned the icons in the widget selector to better indicate the difference between the various table types.

We’ve introduced a new variation of the dashboard table in Funnel that shows months as columns instead of metrics. This new table therefore only holds one metric and displays its evolution over time on a per Channel basis.

With this the widget selector has got a slight redesign that better categorizes the different kinds of widgets available.

New interface for exchange rates

We just released a new interface for setting currency exchange rate values and the date ranges they apply to. Our aim is to make it a lot easier to understand the implications when adding, removing or changing rates and time periods for a given setup.

Although we’d love for the Funnel platform to be the complete solution for all your advertising data visualization needs, we do realize that sometimes there are cases where you need to be able to manipulate the data further.

​The API lets you extract all the data you have in Funnel programmatically so you can incorporate it with your proprietary system, mash it with other data sources and come up with your own visualizations.

Historical currency exchange rates

With monetary metrics (e.g., spend and revenue) in more than one currency, tracking KPIs such as cost per conversion and return on investment quickly becomes a bit messy. Things don’t get easier when comparing KPIs over different years since conversion rates change over time.

This update lets you set different exchange rates for different time periods, allowing for more accurate analyses over longer periods of time.

We’ve updated the Report Center to make it easier to navigate, edit the layout and invite report users.

With this change the left navigation on the Account level has been simplified. "Reports" is its own menu item, from where you access the Report Center as well as the Report Archive.

UX improvements for Custom Metrics

The interface for creating custom metrics now better handles the case where the metric definition is somewhat complex. You now have a lot more space to write your definition which means the whole formula is always visible.

One of the most common metrics we’ve seen our customers create as a custom metric in Funnel is average order value. Creating it yourself is no longer necessary as we’ve included it as one of Funnel’s default metrics. You’ll find it categorized under "Conversion metrics".

3X faster dashboard load times

We’ve been focusing on optimizing dashboard load times in Funnel over the past weeks, and we’re happy to see that this is starting to pay off with more than a 3X drop in average load time for dashboards.

We released most of these updates during the last week of November, which shows quite clearly when plotting the average dashboard load time:

New in-app navigation

If you have a few Accounts in Funnel, or a few Websites within the same Account, navigating between these is now a lot smoother. We’ve introduced a new navigational dropdown which lets you go directly to any of your Accounts/Websites.

The small icons to the right of each Website in the dropdown lets you go directly to the first dashboard, the Channels view or the Settings view for a given Website.

Simplified default Channels

When creating a new Website in Funnel, a few default non-paid Channels are created. With this update we’ve removed some of these that aren’t always applicable, namely Facebook organic, Twitter organic, LinkedIn organic and Pinterest.

The default Channels that remain are:

  • Direct
  • Email
  • Organic search
  • Other
  • Referrals

Faster dashboard loading

Dashboards in Funnel have at times had a tendency to load rather slowly when having to crunch a lot of data. We’ve now rebuilt this so that the widgets load individually, which means that one widget with say a years worth of data doesn’t slow the whole dashboard down.

If a widget contains a lot of data you’ll notice that it might be loading still, even though the rest of the dashboard is ready.

File upload handles tab separated files

Many things can (and as we’ve learned, will) cause errors when uploading files. One of them being CSV files which despite their name aren’t comma separated but rather tab separated. Funnel’s file upload now detects when this is the case and handles it, so you won’t have to reformat the file before uploading.

When creating or editing a dashboard widget, making sense of the date presets can at times be a bit tricky. For instance, the difference might not be obvious between Previous month and Previous period. In order to make things a bit easier to understand we’ve added a preview that shows you the implications of a given preset.

File upload handles more date formats

Funnel’s file upload keeps improving, and with this update it’s getting better at recognizing different date formats. Upon its initial launch it could only handle yyyy-mm-dd but now understands more formats like dd/mm/yyyy and mm/dd/yyyy. There are many ways to write a date, and we aim to minimize the need for reformatting the file before upload.

When we launched Report Center a bit more than a month back, we immediately started getting requests about using it to share dashboards. This is now possible, which means you can give your clients or other stakeholders a way of always being up to date on the most important metrics in a white labeled view.

One of the most misunderstood features in Funnel has been the date picker in dashboards. With this update we’ve tried to make it easier to understand, and also moved it as it has another type of function than the Edit and Report buttons.

If you’re not familiar with how it works, it might help to think of it as a time machine. The date picker lets you go back in time and see the dashboard as it looked on a given day. The date you pick will be the last date for all time periods in the dashboard.

This is especially handy if you for example are about to create a monthly report a few days into the new month. Use the date picker and set it to the last date of the previous month, and you will only see data up until that point in time.

Many reports downloaded from various ad platforms have metadata in the beginning of the report. This typically includes the name of the account, time period and other information to provide context about the report.

Prior to this update you’d have to manually remove this information when uploading a file or Funnel would respond with an error after uploading. With this release however, Funnel understands what data to include and thus ignores the metadata when reading your file.

The view count for reports now shows total views for each report. This includes people who viewed the report via the secret link without being logged in to the Report Center. These views are displayed as "Users with secret link".

Up until now adding images to Funnel has been done via submitting a URL to the image. While a quick way of getting an image in place it’s not always ideal since the image you want to use might not exist publicly online.

With this release you can now also upload an image file from your hard drive.

Report archive has moved

With the introduction of the Report Center, it didn’t really make sense to keep the Report archive - which lists all past reports - on the Website level. It has therefore moved and is now found in the Account menu:

Target line for line charts

It’s quite common for some key metrics to have a target value. Spend typically has a budget and cost per conversion often has a desired max value, to give two examples. In order to make it easier to determine if your metrics are on track we have introduced the concept of a "Target" for line chart widgets in dashboards.

A target is unique to a given line chart, which means you can have many different targets within the same dashboard - even for the same metric. The target is set in the Edit dialogue for the line chart widget:

After creating and sharing a report with your client or colleague it is likely you want to know if they have viewed it. This is now possible in your Funnel Report center:

Auto-tagger for Facebook ads

For Google Analytics to correctly categorize traffic from ads, the ads’ destination URLs must be tagged with UTM tags. Doing this manually can be a headache and often comes with small mistakes that messes up the data in Google Analytics. For AdWords and Bing this can be handled automatically by the respective ad platforms, but for most other platforms it must be handled manually.

For Facebook this ends today with the release of Funnel’s auto-tagger for Facebook ads. Once enabled the auto-tagger makes sure that your ads have the following UTM tags:

utm_medium = cpc
utm_campaign = {CAMPAIGN_NAME}

It automatically checks for newly published ads too, and adds the UTM tags to them. Should your ads already have some tags Funnel won’t touch them. The only exception is if your ads have any of the tags mentioned above that don’t follow Funnel’s convention, for example utm_source=fb. In that case Funnel will overwrite and put utm_source=facebook instead.

To enable it, go to Ad platforms and hit "Configure auto-tagging" for the ad account where you want the ads to be automatically tagged. You’ll be asked to grant Funnel permission to manage ads, which it needs in order to update the url tags.

Unfinished Websites can be removed

This might seem like a very trivial update, but if you ever accidentally created a Website in Funnel - or decided you didn’t need it before completing the setup - you know how annoying it was having to complete the setup before being able to remove it.

With this update the Remove button is always visible which means a Website can be removed at any stage of its setup process.

Most dashboards and reports created in Funnel include line charts. Up until today the hover-overs that show each line’s value at the given point in time has been far from easy to digest.

Fortunately this has now changed. With this release the hover-overs are a lot more structured so you can make quick sense of the data you’re looking at.

Report Center

Having sent a few reports to your client, manager or other stakeholder it easily becomes hard for them to keep track of them all. The Report Center gathers all reports created in an Account so they’re accessible in one place.

In order for someone to view an Account’s Report Center they need to be invited. The invited person then gets a personal login that grants them access to the Report Center and all the reports created in the Account.

To set up a Report Center for one of your Accounts and invite report users, navigate to the Account level and hit "Report Center":

File upload recognizes header names

When uploading a file to Funnel, the uploader now recognizes header names and automatically selects them for you. This means an easier way of uploading data as you won’t have to spend as much time on telling Funnel what the contents of your file is. Just take a look to make sure Funnel got it right and you’re good to go.

Forecasting of cumulative graphs only

The option to forecast a line chart is now conditioned on the graph being rendered cumulatively. That is, when each data point in the graph is the sum from the start of the date range up until the date that data point represents.

Previously Funnel would allow drawing forecasts on non-cumulative graphs, which turned out to be quite confusing and resulted in the graphs look broken. The interface for editing line charts have been updated so that the forecast option now only appears when the "Cumulative" checkbox is ticked.

File upload handles currency in lower case

We keep improving the file uploader. Prior to this update the currency column was required to be in upper case for Funnel to be able to read it. This is no longer the case which means you won’t have to worry about reformatting the currency in order for Funnel to understand it.

If you have a few Accounts with a couple of Websites in each, and a bunch of dashboards in each Website, finding the right one to copy can get messy. This update makes sure the Account you’re in right now always stays on top of the dropdown.

Improved print/pdf capabilities for reports

The reports you create in Funnel can sometimes be handy to print out before going to a meeting. With this update the printed version of a report corresponds better to how the report looks on you screen. To print a report - or download it as a pdf - hit "Print" or "Save PDF" respectively.

"Other" Channel now optional

When defining the Channels for a Website in Funnel the default Channel "Other" has been uneditable up until now. The Channel can now be removed, which means that you can limit the scope of the Funnel Website to only represent the traffic registered by Google Analytics that you care about.

Do note that if the "Other" Channel is removed, the totals for Google Analytics metrics such as Sessions and Transactions might not correspond to the totals you see in Google Analytics.

With a lot of different campaigns in various Channels, you sometimes might need to get an overview of just a subset of them. This is now possible with the introduction of the ability to filter on the campaign name.

Things have become a bit easier when uploading a file to Funnel. Should your file have a summary row at the end of the file this will now be disregarded, as opposed to causing an error which was the case previously.

As a Website in Funnel gets more connections added and Channels created, keeping track of them all becomes increasingly complex. To make it easier to spot problems we’ve introduced a subtle navigation helper in the Settings view.

It lists the content of the Settings page, and highlights any problems that might exist. In the above example the Channel "Facebook" has some issues, and clicking on it takes you to the Channel where you can learn what the problem is.

With Funnel’s file upload you have the ability to add cost data from ad platforms that we haven’t yet integrated.

When doing this the first time for an ad platform Funnel asks you to tell it what the columns in your file correspond to. For example which column represents the date, spend, etc.

With this release you will no longer have to do this more than once for each new source. Funnel remembers your selections so the next time you upload a file to that source all you have to do is confirm that the mapping is still correct.

There is now a brand new menu option under Configuration in the left hand menu: "Metrics". Here you’ll find a complete list of all metrics available for the Website you’re currently working in, as well as the ability to manage your Custom metrics.

Friendlier Channel definition filters

We’ve just updated how the filters for Channels work, making them a bit easier to use. When using OR statements, e.g., source being equal to either "" or "twitter" as in the example below, Funnel now disregards spaces around the separating commas.

Prior to this change, when including a space after the comma would Funnel would treat it as you actually wanted to filter on either "" or " twitter", which would produce the wrong results.

Single metric widgets defaults to horizontal layout

Two of the more popular dashboard widgets are the single metric widgets that show a metric’s change in percent between two periods, or the absolut value for a metric for a given period.

We have now changed how they behave so if you choose to include more than one metric in the widget, it defaults to a horizontal rather than a vertical layout:

Copy dashboards

Having created the perfect dashboard it’s quite likely you’ll want to reuse at least parts of it. This is now possible without having to recreate it from scratch.

When creating a new dashboard you have the option to use an existing dashboard as your starting point - and you can pick dashboards from Websites sitting in other Accounts than the one you’re currently working in.

Titles for dashboard widgets are now optional, meaning you can choose not to have a title at all. This is especially handy for widgets where the metric value and legend does a good job at explaining what the widget is all about.

  • The metric name does not show above the metric value
  • Legend shows below value

Upload Excel files

Funnel’s manual upload, previously known as CSV upload, now also handles Excel files on the .xlsx format. This means you don’t have to convert your source files to CSV in case you downloaded or created them in the .xlsx format.

The ability to create new customized dashboards in Funnel introduced the need for a way to handle them in a more scalable way. We’re now releasing a new option under "Configuration" in the left Website menu: "Dashboards".

Here you’re able to reorder your dashboards, remove them, and in the case you don’t need them front and center - hide them from your menu.
